6 GPTS Doctoral Scholarships at Heidelberg University in Germany, 2018

Starting in October 2018, the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS) at Heidelberg University will grant up to six doctoral scholarships for three years.
The aim of the Cluster is to enhance the understanding of the multi-layered interactions between and within Asia and Europe – an area of great significance for academia as well as for contemporary society and politics.

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context: The Dynamics of Transculturality” at Heidelberg University is part of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments.

Entrance Requirements:

• Applicants must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade (at least 1.7, B+, 2+, “magna cum laude”, or equivalent). The degree has to reflect at least four years of study at university level. Applicants who plan to graduate in the current academic year must provide a university transcript that clearly indicates the progress to degree.
• University and language certificates must be submitted in English, German, French or Italian. Documents in other languages may be submitted as certified translations into English or German.

English Language Requirements: Applicants must prove advanced language skills in English by providing a certificate confirming at least level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, e.g. a score of 100 in the Internet-based TOEFL or a score of 7.0 in the IELTS. Other methods of proof may also be acceptable.

How to Apply:

The application process consists of three parts. Please be advised that English is the working language of the GPTS, so applications need to be submitted in English.

1. Applicants have to register and log into the Online Application System of the GPTS. Further guidelines will be available after login. During the application process, you may save your data at any time and return to the online system at a later date. Changes are possible until you submit or the deadline ends. Through the system, applicants are required to provide

• University degree certificates and transcripts of records
• Contact details of two referees who will be asked to provide letters of recommendation
• A proposal for their doctoral project with a working plan
• A letter of motivation
• Proof of language skills (see above for English, plus – if applicable – other languages relevant to the proposed project)
• Further information about their education, work experience and other skills
• A possible supervisor from the Cluster/HCTS.

The proposed doctoral project must have a clear connection to the general research framework of the Cluster/HCTS.

2. The selection committee shortlists the most promising applicants and invites them to present their projects at a Job Market in Heidelberg. In preparation for the Job Market, the invited applicants may contact suitable supervisors at the Cluster to discuss their proposed projects.
3. Subsequent to the interviews, the scholarship holders will be selected.
